i was considering getting a motoro but i was told they need to be on sand, is this true?

NOPE..... its all your preference...

agreed with the post's above although I feel sand give's them more a realistic environment.

ive always used sand or very fine round gravel.
my next tank is going to be bare bottom. if i dont like it i can chuck in some sand later.

Digestive benefits of sand? ......do they eat it?

my rays do better i feel with sand. and seem to b more happier. also they sift thru it to find earthworms n stuff. also the geo's like it so i use sand once they rays are on there own i will go to glass bottom big fan of bare bottoms

Nope don't NEED. But will they be happier with...I think so.

Bare tanks are fine, but I believe that there is a certain amount of natural dermal sloughing that sand or round smooth gravel provides/enhances that glass can't.
