do they need sand?

i was considering getting a motoro but i was told they need to be on sand, is this true?

nope not at all .. just soft rounded gav. or bare bottom both work just fine

ive always used sand or very fine round gravel.
my next tank is going to be bare bottom. if i dont like it i can chuck in some sand later.

Don't need sand but it's natural for them to hide beneath the sand bed. I would think sand provides an added sense of security. And what about the digestive benefits of sand? Is there any?

my rays do better i feel with sand. and seem to b more happier. also they sift thru it to find earthworms n stuff. also the geo's like it so i use sand once they rays are on there own i will go to glass bottom big fan of bare bottoms

Nope don't NEED. But will they be happier with...I think so.

Bare tanks are fine, but I believe that there is a certain amount of natural dermal sloughing that sand or round smooth gravel provides/enhances that glass can't.
