Hi guys.

Just been making a few designs for some breeding racks recently and came up with this design. I want you guys to tell me if it is strong enough.

The tanks are eight 18" cubes, and two 3'x18"x18".

The stand is 1900mm long, 450mm wide, the span is 1800mm, and the gap between each shelf is 600mm. The metal is 50x50 box (2mm or 3mm thick?). The weight is suported by the welds at each end.

Cheers. Ask all questions, pictures of specific areas can be suplied.

I would think it would hold. I would prefer to have a brace in the middle. That is a lot of weight to spread across that span.

The load on the racks from the tanks is closely uniform. This can be modeled with a single concentrated load. With no brace in the center the tanks are creating a large bending moment acting in the center of the rack. I would definately add a center brace.

I am by no means an expert but I do have a lot of experience with metal fabrication on my farm.

You can avoid the placement of a center brace if you weld a piece of angle iron to the center side of the tubing. This will be more cosmetically appealing than the center brace.

In addition, I could suggest you add an angle bracing to the underside of the tubing where the horizontal pieces meet the vertical pieces.

looks like something we would need pictures of its progress while its being assembled :)

Cheers Eric
