Just been doing some reading about spirulina for fish and want to start introducing it to my GT. What do you guys recommend for a high quality spirulina food?

Do you notice a difference in your fish when feeding this stuff?

Thanks.

I use Spirulina based pellets from Ken's fish for bottom feeders and polypterus and most of my cichlids enjoy it .

I can't say if I noticed any difference but I know some of fish I keep need plant substance in their diet especially my SD'S and CL'S.

Most high quality general (cichlid and other) all purpose pellets contain spirulina. If they don't, they should. Check the labels. I've been feeding pellets of this type for 20 yrs or more. What do you feed as a staple to your GT's?

If you want to include a pellet primarily based on plant matter, including spirulina, all of the major brands have these types of food in their line up. NLS, Omega, Northfin, etc

It's all good, you don't need to feed anything beyond what you are already feeding. GT's will do good with some aquatic based plant matter in their diet, but no need to feed large amounts. In commercial aquaculture they have found that for color enhancing purposes, only 2% is required for optimum results. https://www.lib.noaa.gov/retiredsites/japan/aquaculture/proceedings/report28/Ako.pdf

As far as overall health, both NLS & NF not only contain spirulina, but they also contain other aquatic based vegetation, such as kelp, and various algae. All good quality ingredients for fish, but at the same time you don't want your fish eating too much greens, especially when they are in their growth stage.

BTW - I noticed in your sig that you have petricola in with your GT. Just a word of advice, when your GT gets larger you may find that your synos start eating the slime coat off of your GT. I have experienced this with larger slower fish, and S. petricola. There is actually a species of syno that in the wild eats slime coat off fish as it's main diet. It tends to annoy larger fish in an aquarium setting. :)

Thanks for the heads up. If they bother my GT they are gone instantly. I have no connection to them but at the time I thought it would be nice to have a little something else in the tank. Now that Kai is getting larger I really could care less about the synos.
