I received an email from honda today. I will post my full reply below for anyone to whom this may apply.
Thank you for your email 'honda'.
I was made aware of this two weeks ago from both XX and XX (I did not think it's my perogative to list first and last names on public forum).
Both gentlemen are long term customers and I consider them to be both
knowledgeable and professional in their role as advanced aquarists.
After I received photos from each of them, I saw what they were referring to.
Here is a copied portion of email I sent to X:
"The only plausible explanation I can imagine to be the cause of two Heros spp present in the same tank occurred to me as I'm writing you. My sons and stepsons were all working out in the facility doing water changes over the spring and summer.
Maybe I did hatch some rotkeil eggs in another tank on same rack as notatus fry. It's the warmest rack in the building, so that's where I would place little Heros.
If one of them accidently sucked baby cichlids into the hose, they'd been instructed to place a net over the end of the hose that drains into the floor drain to catch the babies.
If they did this and put baby rotkeils back into a tank of baby notatus, that would explain the presence of both species in same tank.
Hopefully mystery solved.
Please let me know how many rotkeils you have and how many notatus you have."
I am sorry if this happened to the fish you received as well. Just as I gave each of them credit on orders I sent to them last week for any Heros that were misidentified, I am offering you the same credit on the one notatus you ordered as well.
The fry which I raised were bred here in my facility from a wild pair of adult notatus. I also had wild rotkeil adults at that time - in completely different tanks.
There are no hybrid Heros circulating, 'honda'. Each of the above gentleman received individuals of both rotkeil and notatus, as they concurred and showed to me in current photos.
I would ask that you please restrain from making heretic statements about this mix up as if it were a akin to a mass recall by Toyota.
It's the very first time such a mix up occured in over 15 years of business where tens of thousands of fish are bred and distributed world wide from my facility.
I've been doing this far too long, under the highest scrutiny of all - my own standards, to accept the following as general opinion:
"so what is it? You need to fix this because people are doubting your fish
now."
In other words 'honda, I wish you could have been a little more tactful or polite and less accusational in your initial email.
As I said, I am sorry for this mix up. I accept full responsibility for this situation and would communicate the same to anyone who may contact me regarding same subject.
Best regards, Jeff
