buddy is trying to sell me WC from uragoy(sp?) Gymnogeophagus labiatus. 1 male and 4 female. He has papers on them and all. I was reading they have to 3 months cold water. Is that true or is that for breeding purposes. want them for my big SA/CA tank but dont want to move them once a year.

sorry you had to read that I was trying to fix it in advance setting. sucks they are great fish to, just dont wanna put that work into them

Gymno labiatus don't do well with tropical species, I tried about 10 years ago, and they floundered from constant temp, and they do not stand up well to northern cichlid aggressive nature.
They can take warm temps for a while, but a few months in an unheated tank do wonders. I keep Gymnogeophagus balzani and quilero in an unheated tanks year round, and to me, is worth the extra tanks. Colors intensify and growth spurts after cool down.
