I read in the mbuna 90 setup thread you have to soak NLS before feeding it. If so where do I get the vitamins to soak them in and which type should I get? I have a 90 Malawi and I feed 1mm cichlid formula and 3mm cichlasomma.

I've heard you don't need to soak them, mabye when they first came out you had too?? I think "cichlidsrool" would know the answer..

I looked in to it it is highly unnecessary and only leaches out vitamins. I will continue pouring it in straight from the jar. Also the vitamin soak is a bad idea because you will literally OD your fish on vitamins from all the research I gathered today. NLS is a staple food made for cichlids it has all that they need in it.

Yep, there's no need to soak it. I never have.

I can't believe how gullible I can be when it comes to forums. I read your supposed to do one thing then I do some research and find out it could be bunk. Then I research it for a few hours and learn its total BS. But I guess that is what happens when any one can post just about anything on forums.

Sorry rant over. Thanks for the replies fellas:D

At least you really care about the welfare of your cichlids...nothing wrong with that! You get way more wrong info when you just research on your own so good thing you can clarify things on this forum!! :D

It's the age, mine are older and bigger it takes most of them up to 2 or even 3 yrs to fully color out, mine are about 14 months old.... :D Just keep feeding nls... Time will tell! Also, I feed mine 3 "smaller" meals a day rather than one big feeding as well... My water is really good to i dont have to do anythin to it... It's well water so it's hard they like the hard water and high ph... you using crushed coral??

My ph is 8.3 and the water is very hard from the tap. It has high nitrates though (20-40) from the faucet. So I have to do 2 50% water changes a week. If not my nitrates creep to 100+ Fast. I got an RO from coral life in the garage though I gotta figure out how to put it all together as cleanly as possible. I want my water to keep its hardness and PH but eliminate the nitrates so I may return the RO and just make a denitrifier for my water aging barrel. :) I just use standard gravel with lots of lava rock and zebra rock and fake plants :) PH is solid at 8.3 always. Nitrates at best are 10-20 (sometimes the city takes pity on me and I do a water change at the right time and get lucky)
