I don't know where to start... I want to attend school in Switzerland and the very first thing I have to do is learn German. I've only done the preliminary research and apparently there's a difference between Swiss German and Standard German? Is there really a big difference between German and Swiss German?

First of all, I studied French for 4 years and I still can't pull a sentence together, but I heard that German is much easier because of it's similarity to English. So, I want to start off with Rosetta Stone. But my question is, there a better software for serious beginners? I've read several reviews of several softwares and they fail to address the beginners part...

Since I will be taking admission tests in German, reading and writing is also very important!

Not sure, But I'm learning it at school...

Hello,

i'm born in Germany - so it's quite normal to me to speak the german language.

You've asked if there's a difference between the swiss German and the "normal" German.

First ... there are big differences due to the pronouncing! The result is that a German usually do not understand a Swiss! To my point of knowledge there are also differences in writing: The Swiss do not use as many big letters at the beginning of substantives as Germans do ... in this case Swiss german will be a bit easier to write.

The Germans do have also many dialects ... so it is difficult even for Germans to understand all of them!

Now the translation of these words in German (normal):

Hallo,

Uwe

Hi,

I´m speaking German ofcourse too ;)
But to learn German is not easy, much more difficult then learning English because of its many individual word types.

The swiss people write the same but mostly speak there "swiss german" but can speak and understand "normal" German too.
I haven´t that big problems understanding them, from me to Switzerland or France its just 2,5hours.

I speak German! But uwe's is better :(

Well, I can't understand some dialects in Germany, too:D
A funny thing for example is that when a person from Austria or even one from Germany (especially Bavaria) is shown on TV, they got an undertitle:D

So if you learn German, I would say it's very hard for you to understand people from switzerland.

Hell, I can barely understand some americans speaking english due to the variations of dialect. Teenager english is impossible. Good luck. I took german for 3 years in school. I could speak it, spell it - couldn't understand a word of it spoken to me.
