Hi guys I have a Synspilum, about 5 inches. He has been housed with a texas which was the same size at the timeand another syn which was about 7-8inches. Both the texas and other syn were rehomed due to aggression. My current syn now shares is tank with 4 x 2 inch clown loaches and 4 inch ghost knife and is totally fine with all of them, no aggression at all. I added a 2 inch oscar recently, he was in the tank only a couple of mins before he seen the syn, the oscar flared up and the syn took off. 2 more mins passed and the oscar and the syn crossed paths once again, this time the oscar charged right at the syn with mouth opened and gills flared as if he was trying to start a fight....Syns response was to bite him right on the eye. Oscar eye looked pretty bad and though he may loose it so was moved to a hospital tank and treated with melafix to ward off an infection. The oscar died unfortunately, Not sure if it was from the injury, the meds, the stress of it all....prob all played a part.

Anyway back on track.... i want to add more cichilds but now i dont know if i can trust my syn? I dont want to add larger fish as i enjoy watching them grow as babies. WHat do you reckon i should do? Move him on and start again? or try again with another fish and risk injury? Untill the oscar he had been nice and chill and never even fought back when other fish were picking on him. He is starting to colour up nicely and would like to keep him but can move him on if its for the best

What size tank? I would just keep the fish you have and if you want more get another tank first, not the fish.

I would upgrade your fish to the 125 and then do whatever you please with the 4 foot

I agree with the others, the tank they are in is too small for the fish there already, so any new cichlid you add will be at a disadvantage and be killed because there is not enough territory to go around as is.
Even normally peace cichlids such as synspillum (really melanurum) will react badly when cramped.

SYnspilums are a little tougher than people might think, but i agree they are pretty chill......when it comes to Oscars w// other Aggressive cichlids, the Oscars need to be the largest in the tank but NOT big enough to swallow the other fish. They are punks compared to 95% of other CA/SA cichlids and likely will not survive if they are not the dominant fish in the tank
