Well, I needed some fish equipment so I looked at craigslist this past week. So I got:

Aquaclear 110 powerfilter for $20 bucks
Penn Plex 200w heater for $7 bucks.

I think I will never buy new again. It must be the economy. So far everything is working fine.

depends and no the economy isn't affecting certain people

some people just wont mess around with used stuff when they got thousands or hundred or hundreds or millions whatever the case may be dollars worth of fish in that tank if you get my drift....

for newbies its a great way to start out the hobby though or have cheaper fish stock in the tank and not worry about losing money if the equip. malfuction or fail

If you can get it then great, there are a lot of tanks in S Florida on craigslist but no supplies.

I have been keeping fishes for about 15 years. So yea, to me, buying new is a waste of money. Actually when I was a newbie, I bought everything new since I did not know much about what is good or not. Even bought all my tanks new.

most of quality products come with lifetime warranty. Can't go wrong with that so I don't think its a waste of money when people do that route.

when it comes to hard hard hard to find fish people spending years in some cases to locate that fish or years to rear and raise the fish into breeding condition they would not try to play around with used equipment.

I personally do go used sometimes myself when I find the sweet deal. I wish I had a good hand on motors myself or I'll be making a fortune selling used filters cheap.

it really depends on the product itself

I never ever buy any used heaters- on the other hand....I think people are completely nuts when they buy light stuff brand new. Whatever makes people happy- Some planted tank folks gotta to have it new some just know how to stretch their dollar.

with the economy I dont think it affected certain fish people at all with their habits as some are die hard. Its all about a deck of cards can't have them all the same. Many people know how to economize when they got a fish room but some guys got show tanks they gotta have top of the line in everything

really huge list of reasons why people do and dont do it

plus to add to this, tanks are a whole another topic! lol
