I tossed in a crawdad that was about 1.5 inches and my bass didn't want it. I hadn't fed them yet so I'm sure they were hungry and they scarfed down the worms afterward.

My LM is 6 inches and smallie is 4 inches. Was 1.5 inch crawdad to big? It did not have pinchers.

They sucked it in their mouth then just spit it out.

Anyone's bass eat crawfish? I thought they would love it.

I know they eat them but perhaps your individual doesn't care much for the taste?

Eh... it depend.

Sometimes fish will leave feeders alone for a couple of months -- then they decide to snack them for some reason.

Most of my fish will eat crayfish. My LMB however will not. He also won't eat fish, earthworms, crickets, frozen food...all he likes is pellets, particularly Omega One. Definantly not the norm for this species in captivity, most will only take live or maybe frozen.

crawdad have to be pilling. I dont know what the name is called but they will shed there hard shell and then the bass will go after it. I think u can just rip it off. I dont really know.

Heh. I had a vivarium with crayfish and everything... the crayfish lived for about a year or two, then when I went to do maintance, a gecko got him.

My bass loves them. I bought him one tonight. He isn't always in the mood for a battle though. Sometimes he saves them for later.

:iagree: with ewurm, my smallmouth SMASHES those things - they have no chance. I'll drop one on the other side of the tank and he will swim up, inhale it, and swim back to his driftwood in the corner. How many of you rip off the claws?

Well the crayfish is still swimming around in the tank alive so. I guess I'll just keep checking on him to make sure he doesn't die and I guess the bass will take him when they want.

Cool.

I caught this crawdad and he already didn't have pinchers. But I wouldn't have removed them if he had them.

Will the crawdad survive in the tank? its 71 degrees and I took him from a stream that was probably 50 to 55 degrees.

Yea it will live fine, unless the LMB changes it's mind.
