I just set up my new 55 and I was on a serious budget so I purchased this Bio System 75 becuase it was cheaper than most options. I like the floating OXY surface skimmer probually because I've never had one.

Has anyone had experience with this filter?

Is the floating OXY surface skimmer really that useful?
 
On a freshwater tank the skimmer's effect is probably negligible but it's a powerfilter like most of the others. It does it's job and that is generally good mechanical, decent biological and decent chemical but it all depends on how you use the filter.
 
Its just a surface skimmer right, not a protein skimmer? Surface skimmers are great; one of my 75s has a sump with a corner overflow, so the surface of the water never gets oilly and gross looking.
 
I use one with my eheim canister. It was a cheap way to get some extra filtration and some extra surface agitation. I stopped using the cotton/charcoal packs and filled up the chambers with all bio media.
