Does a sump HAVE to be under a tank?

Ok, I just took down my 20 High to make it a sump for my 55...

The stand for my 55 is too narrow to fit my 20 under it...

Can I put the 20 High under my 20 Long (directly left of the 55) and run the plumbing to the 55 from there??

You can put the sump anywhere you want. However, you need to keep in mind that the longer the hose, the less waterflow you will have unless you go with larger tubing/piping and a larger pump. As long as you figure your headloss and have proper accessory equipment it shouldn't be a problem.

I will figure out what kind of piping and hoses and pump to use whenever I start the build, right now I just wanted to know if I could do it =) thanks

How can the 55 be too narrow but not the 20 long? Aren't they both 12" wide? And a sump can be placed anywhere, some crazy SW people even have basement sumps or entire rooms devoted to their filtration. It's just more convenient just to place it under the tank it's filtering.

Because I dont have a standard stand for my 20 long, I have a TV stand...

And the 55 stand is the stand from walmsrt they sell for like $100 and has either the black or cherry inserts lol...

the TV stand is ALOT wider than the 55 stand

well you don't need to have the sump on a stand.

just set it on the floor under the 55.

or put it beside the 55 as long as its below the bottom of the 55g
