Does a sump lose water through condensation?

We set our sump up at the weekend and gradually lost about an inch of water (just refilled it and theres about a bucket full), we have checked, checked & double checked for leaks and theres none. I also guess we would know if there was that much water leaking somewhere!

If not condensation is there any other reason why we would be losing water?

Condensation no....evaporation, yes.

Whats the humidity in your house?

The humidity in my house is around 20%...which means my open top tanks lose about an inch every 2-3 days.

never lost as much as a drop due to condensations.... however durring the summer ill lose around 10-15 gallons a day (combined) due to evaporation

do you have your tank and sump covered? Unless the water sweating through the glass, it is escaping that way.....

The water evaporates through the tank and the sump but you can only notice it in the sump. The water level will (should) always stay the same in the main tank, the sump is where you notice the loss of water.

Maybe a sheet of plexiglass over the sump would help? any sump owners?

im a soon to be sump owner and on advice ive had cover glasses made for my sump to try and minimise evaporation.

a cover wont do a thing for condensation... insulating the sides will help..

The tank is covered but not the sump

and I guess evaporation is what I ment rather then condensation

good ol evaporation... yes.. a cover will do a lot to help slow down evaporation
