hello all, im sure i heard you can connect a pipe to the purge valve (and close the outlet on top) and turn the filter on to drain water for a water change aswell as blasting most of the crap out of the sponges thus cleaning and water changing at the same time giving you no reason to ever open it up???

does anyone do this? can it really work?

I was thinking the same thing the other day , wanted to connect hozes to the bottom of mine with snap connectors to make w/cs quicker , can you leave it running whilst doing this or turn off and let it syphon through ???? Anyone

It will help drain the loose "crap" out of it but it's not capable of cleaning the sponges or the media. It may save you some time though.

im not sure evz, did i read it in the manual? i use a massive 22mm pipe to drain 150gallon in under 15 mins so speed isnt my personal reason but two birds with one stone would be good!-) theose sponges are designed to hold the crap so i dont see how running the water out of a smaller diameter pipe in a different place would let all the crud wash out???? be great if it does though, i will dig my manual out in a bit.

There is a lot of loose crap in the canisters, same with all canisters which is why it's so important that they are cleaned regularly. Just cleaned mine out last week and let it flow out naturally and a lot of gunk came out with no pressure

No idea where mine are in my work lockup with the boxes I'll try find em ,not really to save time as it would be same size pipe as I use now (durrrr evz ) it'd just be a bit neater and think lots of crap would be washed out of canister rather syphon from tank , plus I could top up tank at same time from the top

Close the output valve.

Not a bad invention to have the pump divert water over the sponges and flow out the bottom drain tho!

By closing the output side and opening the drain valve, wouldn't that force the water to leave the drain valve? Water will take the path of least resistance. So I guess technically the pump is reversible.

No. Pull it apart and u will see.
The drain is on the same side as the inlet
Your not going through media to flush
