just curious, apart from the various surface areas of different bio media, does any brand or type make your water clearer than the others.

i am curious if anyone has used different bio media and noticed an improvement in water clarity or do they all do the same thing and it just boils down to the more surface area you have in your filter the better ?

bio media is not really supposed to make your water clearer, thats what mechanical media is for. and if it is making your water clearer, then it will get clogged very soon...

Go to the crafts section of your local Wal-Mart and buy a bag of quilt batting (the stuffing inside quilts). It's the same stuff used as water polishing filter media sold at the lfs but you can buy a king size bag for the same price as getting a cubic yard at the lfs. Cut it with a pair of scissors to fit and presto, it will polish your water soooo clear. You have to change it more often than a sponge because it traps so much debris.

:iagree: thats what i use in my sump. works great. once its clogged, toss it away and replace. dirt cheap too

so mechanical filteration is the key to clearer water, ill try some of the filter wool you suggested, my 2 powerheads have filter attachments on them so i will try it with them and that way its easier to clean out weekly or fortnightly ;)

so why are some people claiming purigen makes their water clearer ?

Purigen and other chemical filtration media will remove colors from water (among other things). Mechanical filtration media removes particles, but cannot remove things dissolved in the water.

If you perform lots of water changes Purigen shouldn't be necessary.

Purigen removes a bunch of undesirables from the water, but does not replace water changes. If you are watching TV, you should be changing your water. If you are alive and you have fish, you should be changing your water. Change water, and you don't have to buy products to substitute water changes. Change your water. While you are changing water, you should change water.
