Hi all--
Anyone who loves boiled peanuts knows that the raw peanuts show up on store shelves around this time of the year. I always boil 10 or 12 pounds and freeze them so we can enjoy them longer.

I boil 4 or 5 pounds at a time (need to get a bigger pot!) and usually end up using about 4 cups of Kosher salt. I've got the salt part down, and it's perfect. I've got one question, though --

Does it take anyone else an entire day to boil these things? Am I doing something wrong -- am I supposed to soak them first, or maybe I'm buying the wrong peanuts (are green and raw peanuts the same)? I put them on at 8:00 or 9:00 in the morning and I'm still sitting up with them that night!

Anyone who boils their own peanuts and might be able to offer any pointers would be great! It won't help with this batch, as I'm already resigned to sitting up with them through the night, but next time, I'd like it to be less than an all-day event if I can help it. Or, if it just takes that long for everyone, let me know! Thanks!

In the shell or out? It shouldn't take that long according to my "source"!

Haha I've never heard of boiling them out of the shell, or ever seen them served or sold that way. I had no idea you could even do it that way. So, definitely, out of the shell!

Got a pressure cooker? It'll probably cut your boiling time down. Better yet- got a deep fryer? Deep fried peanuts beat boiled peanuts any day. You can eat the shell and all!

deep fryer peanut oil and raw spanish peanuts. i also use different spices to add flavor as well as salt.

LOL thanks all but if I fry them then they're not boiled peanuts anymore!

The pressure cooker sounds like it would work but those things scare me.

Oh, well, I'll stick with the method I have... It makes tasty peanuts!
