I was thinking about getting a fire eel for a 125g to start with. Is it ok to keep him on bare bottom? I could compensate for the lack of sand, with a lot of hiding spot's.

can it be done? yes.

is it likely to stress the eel enough to drive it to carpet suicide? yes.

They like to bury themselves, and kind of go nuts when they can't.

Carpet suicide. Lol, never heard that term before.
Thank's for the advise. Noted.
I'm not against putting sand in the bottom, just wondered if people have had good luck with a bare bottom.?.

you can have a bare bottom tank but you will have to have looooots of hideing place and they like pvc tubeing.

Look closely at my sig.... I've kept my 3 fire eels in a barebottom since I got them. Driftwood, and PVC tubing = happy eels. would they be happier w/ sand? probably.

Thank's guys, that's what I wanted to hear.

I definitely agree it can be done given it has a lot of hiding space, is it better / worst for them doing this i don't know... although i personally keep mine in a tank with a fine sand bottom with a fair amount of decoration so that if ever he feels the need to bury himself he can quite comfortably do so...

Although with all that being said and done, i've yet to see my eel bury himself once...

Cool
