In a couple of my tanks, I have taken the carbon out of the cartridges and put in Seachem Denitrate... Not because I want my nitrates reduced, but because it has good surface area, and is a lot cheaper than other media.

Do any of you do this?

lol i might hav 2 do this this is a sick idear

i did not mod my cartridges but i have stopped using them altogether i thought it was such a waste on my 29 gal

i simply put a foam block on the intake to my penguin 180 HOB filter thereby turning the HOB into a sponge filter connected to a bio wheel. i simply rinse out the sponge whenever the flow begins to slow.

the cartridge wasen't doing anything other than mech filtration (chemical filtration is a waste imo unless your trying to remove medicine) so i thought why have to replace cartridges and instead just put a pre-filter for mech. and kept the bio wheel for biological filtration

i havent had to buy cartridges since

i took out the carbon and replaced the original foam with 2 dif sizes foam and blue filter floss.
I first had some white cotton in there and it polishes the water good but clogs within days.
So that's no good...

i do tons of MODS to filters and stuff. i dont usually use the store bought cartridges. heres some of my DIY filter medias that i use.

1. i make my own "bio-bags" out of filter pads sown into the shape of a cartridge, then i put carbon in it.

2. fluval foam- i use this on many of my HOB's (reusable)

3. filter floss. i stuff that in alot of my filters

4. scouring pads work great as sumps media and HOB media

5. super course sponge- works great.

6. carbon filter pads- take a filter pad and sew it into a cartridge shape, then STUFF it with carbon
