Never heard of a black or melanistic morph of a clown knife. Could you be referring to a black ghost knife?

I think the fish you're referring to is Notoperus Notoperus. They're known as the Black Knife or Bronze Knife. Very cool knife fish. Rarely seen (at least from where I'm at). Max out at 2'.

There's also Xenomystus nigri, the african black knife. Though it's not that dark to be called 'black'.

Yep, that's Notopterus notopterus. I've only seen them offered a couple of times. They seem to start out dark and lighten up to a polished aluminum sheen as they age. I've seen adults on fishing sites that positively blazed in sunlight.

I used to own one at 7" long but unfortunately, it died.

Dead black skin eyes so beautiful and elegant . I couldn't find another one for the next 10 years (LFS didn't believe me when I told them this fish existed). I believe it's N. notopterus too.

So, I did the next best thing ie. buy an albino one.
