It's not for everybody, but I use Pool Filter Sand in my tanks. It is heavy enough that it doesn't float around your tank and it is fine enough that fish can forage and move through it easily. It can also be mixed with other kinds of sand. Just make sure that you rinse, rinse, and rinse before adding it to your tank. I only mention it because it is usually found quite easily at home improvement stores like Lowes and Home Depot. A 50lb bag only cost me $10. You can order standard aquarium sand from Foster and Smith (liveaquaria.com) There are many other sites but this one came to mind first.
The best website for buying sand from is Foster and Smith. They flat rate ship all their stuff, I bought 60 pounds of sand and it was like $8.99 shipping.
I bought 220 pounds of CaribSea Sunset Gold for just under $200 ($17.99/bag) and didn't pay a dime in shipping. It was the best deal I could find at the time.
It is back up to $19.99/bag with free shipping over $99.

Just noticed you're in Chicago, if your interested in pfs its $5 for 50# at American sales. Then again with your taxes being so high I'd scoot on over to North Ave beach and take what you need, it would be easy to fill a few plastic bags and placing them in a backpack. Sometimes you have to rob those who are robbing you.
