Does anyone use peat moss in a discus tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
As of right now, I don't add anything to my water, except dechlorinator.....My fish are fat and sassy!!!!!

I may need to soften the water so my eggs will hatch...But so far, they are being eaten. We'll see.

I don't use anything that will adjust the pH.

I don't think it is necessary for tank raised fish, but if you have wild caught discus, that might be a good option.

I use peat in both my discus tank and the barrel i age the water in. I boiled the peat prior to use so it doesnt work as well but it is still enough to lower my ph from 7.8 to 6.8 and softens the water alot. Also no tea stained water, but I have read discus prefer the dark water.

using peat will lower the pH and soften the water, but it will give you "black water", which some people don't like, and as someone else mentioned earlier, its really not necessary unless you have wild discus. that being said, I have used granular peat in my tank and not had any complaints to make about it... good luck

alright, i used some and my tank is kind of tea colored, but I like it a lot. Thanks everyone.
