I'm looking to buy a 240G tank right now and wanted to know how much a glass one and an acrylic one weighs. I put in the dimensions and all the numbers into an online calculator and it said that the acrylic one would weigh 202 lbs. and the glass one would weigh 386 lbs. Is that about right? If that's true, I would need 3 other guys to lift a glass one.

sounds about right, glass to acyrlic isn't a 2:1 weight ratio but the numbers you have there seem to be right as far as the true ratio.

obviously larger tanks, thicker glass and acrylic will weigh more, depnding on thickness of the materials the ratio between glass and acyrlic will change

Yep acrylic is ALOT lighter then glass

Acrylic is a lot stronger too! and also clearer and easier to drill. The only problem with acrylic is the scratching. If you look at it sideways it will scratch lol

Will acrylic bend if you have a strong light over it?

Yes. I have glass over my acrylic tank openings. I put the light on top of the glass. I leave about a 3" air gap between the glass and the light. I live in Phoenix so heat is an issue for me as well. This system seems to work for me.

I don't mind the scratching so much because when it's full of water, you can't really see the scratches. If it's empty, I would just try to buff it out.

It's the weight that made me pick the 210G acrylic instead of a 240G glass tank last year. The 210G could be lifted with just 2 guys, but a 210G or 240G would need at least 4 guys I bet. I don't have enough friends to help me lift something that big and I don't wanna hire a bunch of people to move it, so I gotta go with acrylic.
