I'm going to purchase 5 eba. It seems like the big box pet stores now have them pretty cheap. I usually opt for a local fish store or buying fish online versus these large pet stores. Do you think it matters where I get them in this case? I'm not sure if they all come from big places like segrest anyway.

I would support the local lfs over big chain stores if i could. But if the big chain has nicer/better looking fish it wouldnt matter to me

Yep, I'm with you in supporting local stores. I just wonder if these big box stores like Petsmart who order tens of thousands of these fish for all over the country get lesser quality ones than a fish only shop?

Don't think that just because you go to an lfs means that you are getting a genetically better specimen. Unlike EBJD, EBA are genetically stable so not really necessary to go seeking "better" quality.

I picked up a few bags of electric blue acaras at my killiefish clubs monthly auctions. Almost embarrassing to say how little I paid for each fish (CHEAP). Support local fish clubs.

This is the way to go if you have the option, not every area has one. For me it all comes down to cost and accessibility.....also not every LFS is worth shopping in some of them are as bad or worse than the box stores.

I also agree with Joe, buying from members of a local fish club is to me, the best way to go to get quality fish, and often the least expensive way.
My former local club had auctions at the end of every meeting, and giant auctions and swaps throughout the year. For example, I picked up 10 dovii for $2, and 8 festae for $5 at some.
I also would trade my excess fry with other members for fish I'd not tried yet.
At one of the last meetings I attended one of the master breeders had a couple bags of EBA fry, and one of my friends picked them up for a fraction of what they would sell for in a LFS or on-line.
And if I remember right, I ended up with some of Joe's fish in a box swap trade with his club and mine.
