So my tank drop about 5-8 degrees within a week From 82-84 down to 74-76. The weather outside drop to 30degrees. Well I woke up to 2 half eaten peacock bass and 2 half eaten Severum. I have 10 vieja and red terror. Today they ate my tsn eyeball. He's fine for now with one eye. What could raise the aggression so fast. Vieja and terror are 6inch, tsn is 7in, peacocks were at 6-7in and Severum at 4in. I can understand the Severum death because there more docile but what about the others. Please help. Don't want to wake up to more dead fish.

Usually a lower temp means less aggression. Lower temp = lower metabolism = sluggier fish = less activity = less propensity to be aggressive.

*Shrugs* Maybe just bad luck?

exactly this

This can be explained by one or two aggressive (perhaps hungry) fish that indulged all the other fish into a feeding frenzy. Since it gets repeated (hence learned), tomorrow one or two of them are either dead, injured or cannibalized again. Suggestions, overfeed them a little. If this continues, find the culprit/s and separate them. If this has spread already, well, you're screwed.

Or this.

Also I guess the drop in temp can make some cichlids more sluggish than others and hence get caught (and eaten) more easily. But meh, not when it;s only down to 74-76 imo, and plus chances are the predators would be more sluggish as well.

What is the size of your tank an what are (were) the sizes of your fish?

Another thing you may have to consider is that your fish may be dying off for whatever reason and the rest are just eating the dead bodies. Obviously wouldn't be the case with the tsn, but could be with the other two.

180 gal 6x2x2 with over 300 gal of water combine with the sump. Turns over 9 times.
There fishes length are in my first post. I check water ph, nitrate and ammonia everything is fine. One of the bass was still alive n he was so stress with nips everywhere. Then his guts came out

What species of vieja do you have?

possibly the kills are related to the killers' maturing, and the temp drop is a coincidence.
