For some time I've noticed a nail clip sized scale about an inch behind his eye that is curling upwards/outwards. Not a lot but definitely slowly and surely, while the opposite side remains flat. The first picture is the normal side. It looks more apparent and worrying when viewing in person! Am I just being paranoid or does someone know what could be going on? Thanks!

Geez! You're definitely over paranoid! You have a few choices: nip that part of the scale off with a nail clipper; iron it with a cloth iron; or leave the fish be, and may be one day that scale will fall off, and new one will replace it

Yeah, Im fine with being overly paranoid when it comes to this guy. Thought perhaps it may be the onslaught of 'Warped scale' or something.

Symptoms:
At the beginning, only few scales (5 to 8) are a little warped with congested roots. If attention is not immediate, the scales become bent and swollen. This raising of the scales will reduce the effectiveness on protecting the fish from invading pathogens like bacteria. The affected scales will finally drop off thus exposing an area on the body and increases the susceptibility of bacterial attack. This will result in ulceration and finally death in many cases.

As long as the water is pristine I wouldn't be to concerned. My super red lost a few scales from jumping and never had any issues from It. However there could be another reason they are falling off and that could be a problem. I'm. Merely saying that I wouldn't be worried about bacteria problems if the water is kept well
