he is only a juvenile (2 in.) and i have him in a 10 gallon with a red claw crab. I was watching him eat the other day and i noticed little white specs on his fins. I didnt think it was ick though, because it looks like tiny sparkles(as opposed to white salt) and its only on the tip of his two front fins. is it ich? he seems fine. If it is ick how can i treat it? I cant buy aquarium salt so i will have to use table salt. Also, im tring to get rid of a little nitrites so water changes are out of the question as far as treatments go

Why can't you buy aquarium salt? Nevertheless, buy Morton's salt from Home Depot. Big old bag for cheap, and it's the same as aquarium salt. It's not smart to add another fish until the ich is cured.

I think the 10 gallons for 3 fish will irritate it the most. Don't get the firetrack until you can house all of the fish and their friend properly. Now if the 10 gallons is just a quarantine tank and you have an empty 100+ gallon tank waiting for the fish to populate it, you would still need to get rid of the ich first before adding any fish which I don't recommend that you do anyway because you only have a 10 gallon for them right now.

i have a 75 gallon waiting for him. im just keeping him in the 10 because he is only 2in. long and the 75 needs to cycle first

Don't get the eel, the gt by itself will be plenty big for that 75 gallon eventually.

ok thank you for the advice. The GT is sitting under a big piece of driftwood and just lethargically floating with his bottom fins touching the ground. I put a small abou of flakes in the tank to encourage him to move and he did. he swam up awkwardly fast ate them then reterned to under the driftwood. are those symtoms of ick too? i just added some aquarium salt to the tank aswell he is also breathing kinda weird and it looks like hes trying to scrape his fins against the gravel

Yes, he has ich. He's just stressed and seems to be afraid and so he is hiding. Do what we said and turn the temp up to 84+ and add aquarium salt in small amounts until you reach the recommended level of salinity. If you don't want to go the salt route, go to walmart or your lfs and get some Quickcure or some type of Ich medicine and follow the directions on the package and your fish should be healed in a week.
