Lately I have been finding these white particles floating around in my tank, they look like flecks of paint, upon closer inspection they look fibrous.

The tank is bare, nothing in it but my fish.

I do my water change, suck the stuff up from the bare-bottom-tank with a pump and all is well.

Then every so often I walk past the tank and it looks like a snow storm!

Is this milt from my fish?

I just recently raised the tank temp from 79 degrees to 82, but this was happening before that. He is more active now at 82, acting more aggressive, but at the same time he is not eating as well.

I thought his appetite would increase in the warmer water, at 79 degrees he was eating 4-6 Hikiari Massivore pellets PER MEAL twice a day.

After upping the water he eats 2, anything more he just makes a mess with making me have to syphon the rest off the bottom of the tank.

No matter what he is going to have to stick with the Massivore pellets, I am NOT SWITCHING TO ANYTHING else, been there done that, I know if I give him something else he will never eat a pellet again.

My last JAG a female drove me crazy with its fussy eating habbits. :nilly:

hey mate
im not definite on this but when my GT didnt eat for 2 months , the were white stringy bits of "excretion" through the tank.
there shouldnt be a problem switching to a different food my jag pair will eat anything pellets, blood worms, meal worms, gold fish, chicken, crickets, prawns and anything else i put in for them no one ive known has had a jag that wouldnt eat pellets

It's not milt. That would be clear. If there is no substrate and you still have this problem...it sounds like debris from food or waste...I would put the fish in a bucket, drain the tank and refill.

could be coming off of decoration in the tank or out of the filter after coming off of the filter media. have u got any decoration in there which could be flaking after ure jag biting and moving it?

i would do what mo said.

it sounds like a type of very small worm called planaria. It is not harmful to your fish. I have had it before and a friend of mine has as well. Mostly it comes from uneaten food left in the tank. Just do a water change every day for the next week and they will disapear.

it might be the junk off your ceiling do you have a hanging light? that might knock the stuff loose and it would fall in the fish tank

Well I just came out of the computer room, after doing a complete vac on the bottom of the BARE JAG tank, and the white particles are floating everywhere again.

I can't stand the way they look, it makes the tank look as if its dirty.

I'm running 3 Eheim 2078 Pro3e's! There is no way I am under filtered, I must be turning over atleast 1000gph hour on a 150 gallon tank.

I tried to get some pictures but camera goes out of focus.

Its like someone ripped small pieces of paper towel and dropped it in the water, like I said when you look close at the pieces, they appear to be fibrous.

If its fish waste, fine, if it's not I want to know what the hell it is.

Tank is completly covered, there is NOTHING in the tank, but the fish, 1 powerhead, filter pipes and 2 heaters.

I sure hate the idea of dragging all 3 of these canisters out for inspection, I cleaned all 3 of them well about 2 months ago, and all the fish poop always gets removed from the bottom of the tank where it settles on the bare glass, via water changes.

I GOT IT!!!!!! I was looking at the tank, and caught it!! :headbang2

The little chunks are some sort of buildup, inside the walls of the filter tubing.

I saw one of the filter OUT-TAKES spit some of it out into the water.

Maybe its some sort of mineral buildup? I have VERY hard water here.

I am not sure how to clean the interior walls of the long eheim hosing, I would need a SUPER LONG wire brush, prob be easier to replace the hose lines.

Dunno if I should do that, or drag the filters out for a cleaning, since this stuff may be accumulating in the filter.

I was just going to to post that you should clean all your tubes and make sure there is no gunk built up anywhere. That's just lime scale. They sell a wire brush that you can use to scrub the inside of the Eheim tubing. Should have been with the filter when you bought it.

Is it OK to ignore the problem since its only limescale? The flow is still fine on the filters, and I see this during the water changes.

Although it may not be best for the filter itself, (like the motor) will there be any ill effects on the bacteria in the filter/or the fish?

Thanks.
