On my house I have a whole house filter. It's just one of the small ones that uses the 10 inch cartridges. I use the Dupont carbon cartridges that say they're good for 30,000 gallons. I just saw somewhere carbon removes chlorine. I just wondered if I've been wasting money on water conditioner. I don't have a test kit to test for chlorine in the water. Thanks.

You can try leaving the water in a huge container for a few hours if you don't want to pay for water conditioner. Over here it costs $6.99 a small bottle that will supply enough for 30g

Carbon filters are supposed to remove chlorine. BUT, you need to know if your city is adding chloramines instead of chlorine. If so, you'll need a little more than a plain carbon filter to get rid of the chloramines. Most chloramine filters use two-stage cartridges containing catalytic GAC (granular activated carbon). If you have chloramines and treat it with carbon filters, be aware that this will release small amounts of ammonia into your water, which should be handled by your bio filter.

They don't do chloramines here. I didn't know as far as chlorine removal if the standard flow for the water coming into the house would be too fast for the carbon to have time to remove the clorine. I guess I should get a chlorine test kit. That's really the only way to know for sure. Thanks for the replies.

You should get a chlorine test kit anyway to test your tap water for your home and see when the filters need to be replaced.
