self explanatory title. in the play sand I use, for one it's silica based of course, and there's alot of metallic flakes in it.

Most play sand is not silica, although it would contain some. Instead, it is a mixture of a lot of different rocks in small sizes, hence the metallic flakes (and lots of silt).
If silica sand is desired, look for pool filter sand, not play sand. Pool filter sand will not affect pH as it is nearly chemically inert.

Thanks for the insight, I will look into it for when I need a substrate for a tank that urgently needs to be low and stable. Other than that I'm actually trying to figure out if my sand is raising my already high pH any, and how much it is, because I can tell it's not high enough for tanganyikans to be successfully breeding. As far as testing goes, I don't know why I haven't tested it yet. However I did leave my high range pH test at school before quarantine became a thing, and forgot to pick it up on time.
