Does stinger shed have anything to do with ray growth

I was wondering if rays shed they stingers as they grow? Or is it a sign of Ray growth? Or they just shed them to grow newer and bigger one's?

If i am not mistaken ,ray shed their stingers about twice a year .

Sometimes every 3 to 4 months depending on how much their fed and what size they are. Younger ones tend to shed them more often.

thanks I figured it had to do with growth as the ray gets bigger the stinger grow along with it..
