Does substrate color effect color of ray?

I was looking through some pics of my female marble and noticed that she was a lot darker and her pattern sort of ran together when she was in a bare bottom tank w the bottom painted black. Now she's in pfs and her pattern is amazing. I was wondering if there is any truth to it or it was just her growing and changing

If this is true will dark substrate make black rays darker and light substrate make them lighter?

It's true, works the other way too with white bottoms

hmmmm..... is there happy medium that doesnt run marbles but wont ligthen blacks? As of now I have both and I'm setting up a new tank here in the next couple weeks.

I would think a medium colored brown sand.

It affects rays a lot, them being ambush predators.

hmmm i wonder how that will work for me i have a black ray with black tiles but light sand but since i have had it (only a week) it has got darker and the spots lighter but i dont know if that is just the ray developing as it is only 2 months old.
