So I am picking up a 750gph little giant 3 for my sump return. The output is 1/2 inch so do I use 1/2 inch returns to the tank? I'm thinking a Y piece leading to 2 1/2 pvc as the returns....or should I be using a larger diameter pipe? I understand the overflow rates for gph and diameter but I dont get how diameter applies to a pump...
Thanks for your help

all depends on how much force you want the water to have once the plumbing ends...

750gph is 750gph no matter how you split it... the larger the diameter you have the less force the water will have upon exit...

thinking of it in terms of weight may make it easyer..
a 100lb rock weighs 100lbs...
10 10lb rocks still weigh 100 pounds its just easyer to handle..

750gph though a 1/2 in pipe is 750gph
750gph though 1" pipe is still 750gph theres just less "force"

Bingo^^^^

NICE....That is a perfect explanation....honestly thank you
I'll probably have to play with the sizes then, I'll start with (2) 1/2 inch outputs and if its to much maybe move it up a diameter or add another 1/2 inch
Thanks this really helps me out

Also understand that a pump's outflow rate is at the pump head. Aquarium pumps usually show the flow rates at #ft head away from pump. Depending upon impeller design and plumbing, a 750 gph pump may only have 1/2 it's flow rate after 5 ft of plumbing and a 4 ft rise from pump level.

spraybars are a really easy way to keep a single 1/2" line from being a cannon.. extra connections and lines are not really needed to fix this.. my rio is rated for 660gph at 4' of head.. it sits at about 2' a single 1/2" line it blasts the sand around and pushes my driftwood around..
not only that but if i take my hand off of it it will push itself out of the top of the tank and empty the 40 gallon sump onto my floor before i can shut it down.. usuially it happens to do this behind the tank which is very helpful in that "GODDAMNIT!!!" sort of way... however... i added a 2'x1/2" spraybar with 3/8" holes every 4 or so inches... my sand stays put even my plants are for the most part intact.. even the fish* can swim around without getting blasted

*pleco, 7 bichirs, 3 IR sharks, thinbar, paroon, 3 hi-fins, 2 pinktails and a random goldfish thats to big to be eaten put a bit of wear on the plants

.. sorry if this is not as clear.. even im having trouble reading it..
