Hi everyone. I have a friend that has a flowerhorn that looks like it is beginning to get ducklips but I looked and I'm not sure. One side of his mouth is blackish and he doesn't close his mouth all the way. Mine was like that but it had a big white bump on his lip that popped and it was ducklips but I took care of it. The only thing I'm wondering is that his fish has a white pimple right in the middle of his kok. Is this still ducklips? Is having a pimple on his head at the same time still means it's ducklips? He does 25% water changes every 3-4 days and we just tested his water. Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0, PH 7.6, Nitrate 20. Please give me some answers quickly so we can start treating him for ducklips right away. Could the water parameters cause the ducklips or could it be some kind of infection. Let us know what to do. Thanks, Ed.

You didn't say what temp the tank is kept at. Being kept long term in warm water (above ~82) a build up of detritus and irregular filter maint are major contributors. If the fish the fish is kept solo and or there has been no lip locking with tank mates I would strongly suspect Duck Lips. Drop the temp to 72-75 add salt at 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons ASAP and treat with a combination of Kanamycin/3X sulfa. If you can't find Kana use the sulfa by itself. If can get the Kana in addition to treating the tank soak some food in the Kana and feed it to the fish if it will eat.

I'm using metro and myracin because that's what I used to cure mine before and it was in the advanced stage. The thermometor is reading about 82 but I don't trust that it's correct. Both he and I are using the cheap stick on and the tube kind you stick to the inside of the tank but they read different temps, so I know they aren't accurate. What type of thermometor do you recommend? I know that there are some battery operated ones that you can put a stick in but are they accurate. Also, I think Home Depot has a type that you either put the stick in or point it at the water. What kind do you think is the best and how much will it cost because I don't have much money now. Thanks, Ed

I have a glass tube thermometer with a suction cup to stick to the glass. Coast about $5.

I never used one of the infered thermometers on aquariums so I can't vouch for the accuracy in this application. I use standard glass thermometers they always worked fine for me. I have a couple of the digital types with the probe that goes in the water but they don't seem to be very accurate.
