I went to a couple of LFS's today in my area, here are just a couple of stupid, uniformed things i heard from thier "knowlegable" staff in 1 of the"better"places i heard 1 staffer tell a young girl and her father that a Pacu could live a very happy life in a 20 gal tank.In another place(a big chain)1 staffer was saying how a Leopard puffer can live in fresh water(yeah maybe for a couple of days)and that tetras can live with Oscars.I think that there should be some kind of Goverment sponsered Department that over sees these LFS"s,so that people new to this hobby wont get ripped off or told ridiculous lies just so the customer will spend money in thier store.Does this sound crazy to you guys?? :screwy:

You need to realize 2 things...

1. Your probably talking about an employee that's making minimum wage so he does'nt really give a pile of steaming fecal matter what people buy...or because it's a low wage job the management hired the first yoyo with a pulse that walked in the door regardless of his/her lack of knowledge cause that's all they could get...

2. The last thing we need is more freakin' government regulations about ANYTHING...

Pacu can live happy (if short) lives in 20g tanks, just replace a portion of their diet with librium, heheh.
Seriously though, we do not want another incompent beauracracy passing regulations just to justify their existence while not actually accomplishing anything useful. We have too many now.

i overheard a store manager telling a new hire why he fired the previous girl. he asked if she could swap tanks. oscars and neon tetras.he said she put the o's in the tetra tank before removing them. needless to say the tetras no longer needed moved, and there was no need to feed the oscars that day. any gov. regulation would only cause a big increase in prices. i guess we must always educate ourselves about any fish we buy. it is sad to see so many newbies getting wrongful information from undereducated sales staff. im also sure that if there were some sort of schooling that fish store employees must complete then there would be a price increase to compensate the schooling and the fact that the stores would have to pay better wages wich would directly effect the consumer giving everybody just another :duh: :duh: thing to complain about...

:iagree: with guppy and I myself am good on any new policy maker's and new government agencie's there are enough lawyer's and polition's deciding what's good for you and me already and It need's to stop... :swear:

Well maybe saying a "Goverment Department" was the wrong thing to say,how about a group of dedicated hobbyiest going to these LFS's and policing them??I know that i would be very interested in doing something like that.Of course you would have to worry about getting arrested or thrown out of the store!!!Well maybe somethings just cant be changed. :swear:

I also agree with the lack of knowledgeable staff at most big box pet stores, but like its probably been said many times, most people who work there are likely part time/minimum wage hacks who are "going through the motions". Fishkeeping can be a rather expensive hobby, especially when just starting out, so I figure the more experienced hobbyists wouldnt be working the aisles at the local Petsmart. Although, there are always gonna be exceptions.

As a smart (hopefully) consumer, it just makes me appreciate the wealth of experience and advice to be found online at sites such as MFK.

Whenever I go to any lfs, I like to remember that "my 20 dollars is always going to be compatible with their cash register". (sorry, cant recall the source of that classic quote)
