can you keep/has anyone tried keeping a snakehead(channa striata) with a gator gar or florida gar?
gator is about 1.5 ft long, florida is 11inches while snakeheads are 10inches.
the 2 gars are in a 12'x4'x3' pond.

I am not an expert, but IMO: The Gator gars will easily outpace the Channa Striata in growth rate and soon be large enough to eat them or kill them.. The growth rate of this Snake head will slow down after 12"-14".. The Gator Gar's growth rate will not slow down till he is about 2.5-3 feet.

Also, there is the aggression issue with Snakeheads bullying the Florida Gars. But, I am not very sure about this.

I would advice against this combination primarily due to difference in growth rates of Gator Gars and the Snakeheads.

Cheers,
Sid

PS: I have kept Gator Gars (not any more), Florida Gar and (in a different tank) Dwarf Snakeheads.. Above "opinion" is based on what I read up on the larger Channa. (I am considering keeping the Auranti or a Barca as this is not as expensive in my neck of the woods as it is in the west.)

PPS: Channa Striata are pretty common and used as food fish in several parts of India. They are very rarely considered as "ornamental" or aquarium fish. I wonder if this feeling I have right now ("why would anyone want to keep a C. Striata?") is what people from the South (of US) have when they see people like me spending good $ on Gars..:))

not really but there can be serious fghts fot territorry. A small possibility.

thanks for the opinions guys.i was thinking about the aggression too, especially from the channa, although i was also wondering if it would work with the size of the pond.
And yes sid, they are very common.in fact,i bought the snakeheads from 2 kids who caught it in a flooded ricefield.bought them for 50cents.haha!oh well, might as well eat them.hehe!
