So far i cannot believe how fortunate i am that my 4 green puffers eat everything i offer.. i thought this was unusual since they are wild captive... so far i have fed frozen blood worms, frozen krill... hikari pellets, and cooked store bought shrimp... :D what else can i try besides snails which i will buy this week.

Please do not feed cooked shrimp, it lacks nutrition

Use shell on (helps with the teeth) uncooked shrimp.

Also, please reserve krill as a treat and not a staple. Krill causes lock jaw in puffers, which is hard to reverse. And can cause death by starvation.

Thawed blood worms are good, but also not really a staple because they are not super nutritious and they do not help keep the teeth worn down. And, when your guys get bigger...blood worms will not be financially sound

You really need a better variety and more crunchy foods to keep their teeth down.

I feed shell on shrimp, prawns, shell on mussels, slightly crushed crab legs, earth worms, peas, ramshorn and pond snails from my snail tank, octopus, plankton, shell on clams and the occasional live gut-loaded ghost shrimp.

If you do not keep their teeth down they will not be able to eat and you will have to trim them yourself (which is a difficult and stressful process)

Also, just to add, many of the foods I mentioned you can buy at the seafood market. If you buy something and it is not frozen, please freeze before feeding to kill parasites that can kill your puffer.

excellent information.. surprised that cooked shrimp has so little nutrition.. i knew about the teeth and intended to buy snails and raise them in my plant tank..i do not think i will feed krill at all.. wow lock jaw thats scary stuff.. what about pellets.. they seem to like the hikari pellets... do you mean clams in the shell?? how do you do that.. do they eat the clam shell?? tell me more please..

this is how you would feed mussels and clams for your little guys. You open and then they scrap their teeth as they jerk out the meat.

if you had a bigger puffer they could just crush the shells themselves.

I would stay away from the pellets, just because real food is so much more natural, cheaper and better..and fun to feed:popcorn:
For things like blue snow crab legs...you use a hammer and crush them a bit and they will chew on the cracked shell to get to the meat.

just to get you started Walmart sells a bag of mussels for about $3.50.

Make sure to quarantine snails when you get them from the store to make sure they are healthy.

I have a Ceylon puffer ( tetraodon fluvitilis ) and I feed him frozen krill as his staple. I've had it for over four years. He's as healthy as can be and his beak is well worn.I feed him every 3-4 days. He also gets a few snails/clams at each feeding for the beak. I've also fed him marmokrebs (crayfish), which he loves!

I've never posted a pic, but I will do my best tonight with my girlfriends camera:)

I also forgot to mention that he is in brackish water, sitting at 1.017, and will eventually make it to full saltwater.

If you want more info on puffers, make sure you check the pufferforum.
