So I let my larger new world cichlids try some Iams mini-chunks. They really like it. I'm not planning to make this a routine or anything, but I'm curious if anyone has tried other pet foods with their fish and what some of the draw backs could be.

Most dog foods are oily. Can't imagine thats good for the fish and water quality.

judging by the ingredients on some of these foods, a lot of the protein sources aren't the sort of things fish are accustomed to digesting

It will leave a lot of extra waste in your tank. Your fish will pass most of it out without absorbing much nutrition from it. A once in a while treat may not be too bad. Feeding on a routine basis will be more work for you and less nutrition for your fish.

Right. Many foods are fine as an occasional treat. I gave my Oscar a piece of dog food once after doing a little reading on it. I was surprised by the loud crunching sound he made when chewing it up. So I did it once more for my brother-in-law to hear, then never again. The stuff feels greasy. I just picture fat deposits all over his little liver and it's easy to hold back. :)
