Amongst the Catfish & Plecos
I have my larger tanks in our garage, which is not insulated all that well so maintaining temp has been a problem. So, instead of cranking up the 900 watts of heaters, I pulled the dryer ventilation hosing out of the wall and am letting the excess hot air pour into the garage. Keeps the temp up in the garage by about 3-4 degrees per load. It's been a pretty effective energy saving trick (I thought I'd share) for us during these months when it hasn't been too cold. Tonight, though, it seems to be dropping faster, so here I'm trying to stay awake for do one more load of laundry to keep the fish warm. I think it might be time to insulate the tank again, and maybe invest in some insulation for garage. ;)

I would prefer to insulate the garage, but since it isn't "your" garage, just go for insulating the tanks.

An electric dryer would be ok, a NG dryer doing this would be dangerous and illegal.

Either way watch out for lint in your tank.

The only concern is the added humidity could cause mildew growth in the fishroom. If you insulate,a dehumidifyer and the dryer should be enough to heat the room except when it gets really cold.

Sorry, I failed to mention that our garage has too much, unintended air flow through it, and that is partly why it was getting so cold to start with. It's not just fiberglass insulation that is needed to fix the problem. In my tired mind, I was referring to the basic insulation aspects of the garage, and that's why I wasn't too worried about the potential problems of CO2 or moisture. I wish the garage was in a quality enough condition to really allow for those problems. The garage door doesn't close completely on one side part due to the fact we have an open drain that runs under the door and partly due to the fact that I think there was a lack of quality workmanship by the people who built this place. (One of the many reasons we aren't buying this place and want to move in about 4-5 months). Also, we have several open vents for what I assume to be the SoCal hot summers and preventing carbon monoxide poisoning. Also, thanks to our *awesome* landlord, the walkway door to the garage needs to have the moulding replaced allowing quite a draft though the entire garage. Of course, once the garage is actually more properly sealed, this would not be such a great idea. I was tired, and I guess that seemed obvious in my mind last night, but reading it this morning it definitely doesn't come across that way.
