So my coldwater community (fancy goldfish and dojo loaches) got ick. The loaches do not have ick yet, but I want to cure it before it gets really bad.

I don't really want to use salt treatment since all it does is keeps fish calmer when you heat up the tank. I don't really want to heat up and overstocked coldwater tank.

I think I remember dojo loaches not being able to handle ick medications. I am not certain though.

Also, two of them are only 1 1/2".

Any ideas?

They are very sensitive to ick medications. These are also extremely small and probably more sensitive then adult dojo's. If the salt/ heat treatment is indeed out of the question (best option IMO), then try the Aquari-Sol parasite treatment specifically designed for sensitive species. Follow instructions on bottle carefully!

Weather loaches are relatively inexpensive ($1 - $2) so if you are not worried about killing them you can go at regular dosages to be assured to help the goldfish.

Another option would be to purchace a cheap 10G aquarium (they run $13 @ Petsmart) and seperate the Dojos from the goldfish. This way, you could treat the goldfish at normal dosages for hardy fish and the Dojos with the formula for sensitive species. The 10G could then always be available for a hospital/ quaranteen tank!

I do have a few empty tanks. Maybe I should separate the dojo loaches into their own tank and do a salt treatment for them and treat the goldfish with aquari-sol.

I prefer the salt treatment myself with ick, but my tank is really over crowded ATM and I don't want to like suffocate the fish by raising their temperature.

wait dojo loaches are coldwater?

not really cold water but they are able to handel it quite well.

as for the topic of dojo loaches with ich meds. I have four in my tank and when I had goldies with them they all got a bad case of ich. what i did was add the tank buddies ich meds. it really works. just turn off your filters when its going and it will turn the water blue. just make sure you keep it well airated. the gold dojos are pushing 7 inches(slower growers than the browns) and the stripped brow is pushing 12inches and the spotted is right at 10 inches. they should be fine with the meds.

Well today I just did a water change, and even with my window and ceiling fan on the tank was 80 degrees. It was 80 for a while, but I figured it cooled down since it started getting colder outside.

So I will go ahead with the salt treatment and 50% daily WCs.

As for dojo loaches being coldwater, they seem to do best in the same conditions as fancy goldfish.
