Dominance in biology is the state of having high social status relative to other individuals, who react submissively to dominant individuals.

The big group of azuls are/have been establishing heiarchy for several weeks now...as I was hoping with a large group they would hash this all out at a very early age to prevent higher aggression later on....we now have an established king. I shot this vid to show how once there is an unchallenged dominant all the others are given reinforcing "punkings without damage" to show whos boss...notice nobody challenges him...this wasnt so just a few weeks prior as everyone was fueding for top position....now that this is established there shouldnt be any aggression issues later on as this group will be together and established for quite a while....enjoy

amazing. i love your setup. so the dominance of the cichla almost reminds me of a wolf pack.

I guess you could say that, except cichla dont roll over and pi$$ themselves in the presence of the alpha;)

Really interesting, cool to have the vid with it. Is it just the one boss or is there more to it in terms of structure, or is that too hard to pick up on?

Great video keep them coming ... :D

during the establishing of heirachy there are sometimes several thus some hardcore fighting, but once a boss or dominant establishes himself then there are no others...he is the king. he will be the first at the food and will designate who needs to be where...ie he will sometime push certain cichla away while letting others hang with him...also if another takes food first they usually will be chased down and put in their place quickly....and it is not uncommon to occasionally have somebody step up for a try at the top spot...this will end up in split fins ect and on a few rare occasions ends in death. In a large group there will also be a whipping boy..the smallest weakest looking one will be picked upon consistantly by the entire group...always! ironically it is these small whipping boys who are usually tough as nails due to growing up being beat on and always last in line to feed...they are tough little individuals....eventually this group will establish one and I will put up a vid showing the reversed pecking order of the runt. ;)
