I know it's pathetic, but I simply can't figure out how to gravel vac. Please tell me how lol, I know it's a very important thing too.

There are a few approaches.

1) Suck on the end. Don't bother. Yucky and unnecessary.

2) Submerge entire hose to fill with water, cover end with thumb, get into position and release for instant suction. Bad because it is more likely to get hose clingies into the water (like dog hair, etc.)

3) The preferred method of putting the hose into the bucket and dipping the vacuum tube into the tank. You let it fill by tipping it to let the air bubble out. Then pick it up a little, open end up. Once the water has begun to flow, immediately re-submerge the tube so it can't suck in any air. It may take a few tries. Don't panic.

ahaha I had been trying the last type, I guess I was letting it suck up air.

Thanks!
I used to suck on the other end because I didn't know how to do the 3rd approach!

I had bad experiences with the sucking
uuuugggghhhh :p

um by using a python you don't have to do any of that BS.....just open the valve and turn on the faucet untill the hose fills w/ tank water and when you turn off the water it should run on its own. all you do to gravel vac is stuff the large tube into the gravel and lift letting the gravel fall and the lighter detritus/food/crap will likely be sucked up. i like to go through my whole tank 3x during a W/C and i turn my filter up all the way so they suck up any free floating matter. it's really a simple procedure.

thank you all!

You and me both bro blechh nothing like a mouth and set of lungs full of tank water :WHOA:

If you cant get it to work you can do the suction method. Just be careful.

i still can not for the life of me understand how people get mouthfulls of water when starting a syphon... just suck real hard for like half a second.. ... remember.. you are not in the back seat after prom with this hose...

:lol3: I think your prom date looked very different from mine...

A lot of new syphons have a check valve in them. All you have to do is bounce the syphon in the tank a few times and the flow starts on it's own. I'll refrain from a prom analogy on that one...

buy a gravel vac you just move up and down in a particularly familiar motion and a valve stops the water from flowing back out, eventually you fill the large vacuum piece and eventually the tube and the water coming through the tube begins the syphon. no need to suck and have a taste of that delicious fish water.
once thats done just drive the vac piece into the gravel until the dirt gets sucked up.
