I bought a cichlid the other day that is a baby. It is black with pretty tiny blue spots. I was told it will get kind of a yellow streak down it's shoulder area when mature. I was told it is a female as you can tell by the fins...I am trying to find the name of this little gal so I can research. Would like to make sure it is a female so that I can get a male later. Any help would be appreciated.

Who'd you buy it from that didn't tell you the name of the fish?

Thanks guys! I am sure that is the name. I saw some pictures online. I bought it at a lfs, my husband is not well and was with me. Just as I was buying it, he got sick and needed to go sit in our van , I was forced to just buy and run. Doesn't really matter what sex it is, I'm just going to keep the one. Thanks again!

Are you sure it isn't a young Paratilapia polleni ("Starry night" cichlid)? They are black with blue dots even when quite young. If it is, it is Madagascan. They do develop a golden nape when more mature. Here are a couple of pics of some juveniles and adults.
