I came out this morning and checked my tanks as usual andeverything was fine. Came back a cpl of hours later and my Histrex was dead. He had red marks around the front of his disc. He was feeding and swiming fine. The Motoro is still doing fine. Here is his final pic.

sux dude sorry. One of th only rays I lost, knock on wood, ws a hystrix....

What size tank?

Tankmates?

Exposed heaters?

Water quality? Ammonia, Nitrite?

FYI ~ Not a true Hystrix.. but a false Histrix out of Peru.. They are harvested in high numbers and often times have very poor quality care when being collected and exported, as they are so abundant they treat them like any other fish.. Probably had internal parasites.

100 gal tank

Silver aro, Jardini, and motoro

no exposed heaters (they are in the sump)

Water quality excellent just check on sat. (dont remember the exact numbers)

Does this pose a threat to my motoro? How can I treat him?

Small water volume, easy to spike in Ammonia.. a bit over stocked depending on fish sizes..

Could be the Jardini, they can be aggressive towards rays..

Water quality can be 'excellent' when you test it, only because you've allowed a few hours for the ammonia spike to filter itself out.. Often times, people will experience ammonia spikes right after feeding, test the water hours later, and assume their never was an ammonia spike. Ammonia is extremely lethal and the #1 killer of all fish.

Most rays come in with parasites, unless you worked with a quality vendor.. Try Metrodazinole or Praziquentil..

sorry for your loss :(
