So a few nights ago I tried turning my tank light to red before going to sleep instead of the blue. Immediately my jack Dempsey started coming into another fishies territory and picking a fight. I watched for abit before changing the light and everyone went to sleep. Last night I tried it again and go no such response for about an hour so I left it on... Woke up this morning to find my JD beating on my already half dead EBJD and my other fish cowering in the corner. Normal light came on and the JD left every one alone.

Lesson learned; red light and make some fish go berserk.

I have experienced pecking order reversal with fish when I turned on and off the aquarium light. When the light is on, one fish will bully another fish. When the light is off, the bullied fish will instantly become the top dog and bully his former tormentor. This has happened a few times with different fish, so it is not an isolated incident. Light can change the behavior and perception of fish to one another.

I currently see this in my tank with a pearsei in charge during the day but then in the evening/early morning when lights are out, my regani then takes charge. Very funny in change in behavior. Glad im not the only one to see it.

Is that a question or a statement?

The change in behavior is so sudden as if the fish were operated by a flip of the light switch.
Yep, my lighting is on timers and you can see the change as soon as the main lights go off. It is amazing how much the lighting can effect fish behavior.

I have no red light but I do know my fish will freak out after light out in total darkness, I can hear the flashing water that they try to swim, jump and hit the tank wall. So, I just keep blue light (moon light) up all night and everyone happy :)

Ya, I normally have a blue light on at night.
