Anybody who has read any of my posts in another section will know this: I can easily decide on a species, or group of species I want, but I always, WITHOUT FAIL, find another one I like, and need to decide. So you all know the first tangamyikan set up idea, so here comes number two!
Tropheus. I have heard they are hard. How difficult are they compared to discus? The very reason I am trying Africans is because, quite frankly, I miserably failed with my discus. And it suck to lose those fish. It really does. But anyway, I'd do dubiosi in my tank, and could manage 2 weekly water changes of 50%. My tap also comes out at 7.6, and the tank will have crushed coral sand. Will they acclimate to this PH? And next, do tropheus need caves, or do they just need rocks as territory and to break sight lines? So now the question o the day: what would you do? Tropheus or the original plan?

By the way, I'll be starting with Juvies, and will do my part to keep it to one male and however many females I can have in the tank, which would be useful to know too.

Thanks!

I kept and bred tropheus for years. They really are no more difficult than other african cichlids to keep. Provide them with good water quality, proper filtration, a decent diet containing spirulina, and you should have no problems. You should start off with a decent size group 10 -12+, female heavy, with a few males. Your water should be ideal for them. Just keep up with your weekly water changes.

If you go for dubiosi make sure you have every inch of the top sealed, I had a group once and they jumped the tank like crazy. They are not hard to keep if you have the right water parameters, keep up on water-quality/water changes and make sure to feed them the proper diet. Pretty much what joe said..

I have a breeding colony now and they are alot of fun and interactive not hand shy at all and very good beggars so don't over feed get a routine and stick with it.
Good luck they are worth it

Thanks everyone! What should I expect to pay for them around 2"? I trekked up to the blackwood aquarium center and they have them at 25 bucks for a 1.5" juvie! Isnt that kinda high? Anybody who lives near me know any more good places to check out? I'd like to avoid ordering online

check out valley aquatics they may have some F1 fry Steve is great to deal with, and at $25 for 1.5" fish you could probably get WC adults 3-4" for about $32
