Well, I was looking at sites like glasscages, and they recommend 3/4" styrofoam under the tanks to help prevent seal breakage and even out the load of there's any un-evenness in the stand. I just had a thought and was wondering if this might work. At Lowe's, they have the weather stripping that you can put in door jams to insulate the door. They come in several different sizes as well. Would this work if it was placed around the edges of the stand so it's even with the edges of the glass tank? The ones I was looking at I think were 3/4" or 1" thick, and are soft.

It might... but the styro works for sure, and will only run you a couple bucks.

That weather stripping is too "squishy", it will collapse to almost nothing with the weight of the tank, styrofoam is used because it has some give while still supporting the weight without deforming a lot (it uses the cushion of trapped air for support, rather than direct material strength)

i agree with this that the weather striping that you'r talking about will compress down to nothing and will actually defeat the purpose of what you are using it for

sorry dude but it wont work, its suck a small surfase area that the 1000lb of tank will squash the seal flat and posably cause more plrbems then its ment to solve. the pink/blue insulating foam thats ment for basements realy works best. but plan for no compression because the tank spreads it weight across it so wel that the foam realy doesnt compress more then 1/8" if that. it only compresses where there is a bit of a hump in the stand.

you would be fine without it but with a home made tanks its better safe then sorry... plus in my home depot the 1" stuff only costs $5 for a 24"X8' 1"thick piece...

ok, lol......

I was just thinking it would work. Most tank stands that I find in the stores don't have a wide edge that the tank sits on anyways, and thought it might be a possibility. And the under side of the tank is hollow as well, doesn't sit on a flat surface like a table top. Wouldn't styrofoam also compress, as it won't be a very wide piece, just long? But I see your point. :)
