What is the easiest way to tell the difference between a brycon and dorado? My lfc has a fish labeled as a dorado and I was just wanting to find out if they are right. Also could I put a dorado or brycon with my odoe and ornate?

we'll a baby dorado looks like this

NOT MY PIC

and brycon looks like
Brycon.jpg

ALSO NOT MY PIC

but both get big dorado get larger and think both would fight like crazy with your odoe they may do fine with the bichir but dorado can be pretty aggressive brycon seem to not like any fish that looks like it at all they will dive bomb fish that don't fight back but an ornate would keep to itself but i would expect trouble with the odoe and those two

also there are a few species of fish called brycon most are related though

Both are active fish and get quite large Dorado upto 36" although nowhere near that has been achived in captivity YET.

The ornate will probably be ok, While the Dorado is small you won't have to much problems with the Oboe. once it gets a few inches on him it will all change, and it won't take long, mine easily grew 1.5" a month upto about 8" then have slowed down a bit. The aggresion will surface and unless the oboe can get out of the way there will be problems.

I have no expearence of Brycons but have heard they can be just as bad but in a smaller package.

heres a good pic of a brycon. hope it helps w the ID.

I recently had a 3" Dorado, it was a beautiful fish I loved watching it move, but it was an absolute psycho. It was trying to eat my 2" Peacock Bass and attacked all the other fish. I had to move it out after only 36hrs in there. A friend of a friend has a Dorado that exceeds 24" again this fish nicknamed The Murderer it doesn't tolerate any new tank mates. Apparantly last year it DESTROYED a 30" Red Snakehead and it didnt take long.

Be warned.........

If you're talking about the "dorado" at JoJo Aquarium, it appears to be a Brycon dentex. They are savage beasts, but will top out around 14 inches, a much more manageable size than a dorado. Brycon dentex have that characteristic toothy jaw that is not found on other Brycon species.

The redtail brycon, Brycon cephalus, is another dorado look-alike that is found in the industry. It can actually get larger, around 18 inches. I have seven that are 14-16 inches in with two dorado of 16 and 20 inches. The RTBs are deeper bodied and have a less muscular jaw. They look very similar to dorados as juveniles.
