Dorado with Rays

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
AFAIK only DB has kept the two together, he didn't report any problems, but he does say it depends on your dorado, whether or not you can have tankmates, some are nasty some aren't

I briefly tried the combo but my dorado was very aggressive so I quickly parted with him. Great combo if you can get it to work.

I've heard the brassies arent as aggressive as the other dorado. Do you know which species it is?

I would say small dorado with bigger rays shouldn't be an issue as they occupy different parts of the water column, and the way I see it the dorado will either want to kill something to eat it or out of pure aggression, so if the ray is much bigger than the dorado I think you would be able to remove the "eat it" factor. Just a thought, I'm not a doctor.

I've had a lot of Dorado and have always kept them with rays...... I've never had one that wouldn't allow tank mates..... BUT have had several that hated other Dorado when they got big.

Your Dorado will be so busy pacing back and forth in the tank it won't even know a ray is in there......

Make sure it's big enough to escape from the ray in the event the ray pounces on the Dorado, but I don't see the combo being any kind of issue......

I remember H20 Mike having a monster 30" Dorado that was supposed to be a mean SOB, but I also remember him saying it was never a threat to rays.....

Just from my limited experience, this combo is what works best for dorados. A couple of the suppliers here keep their stock for stingrays and dorado together and the doradoes only fight amongst each other but in a large enough space and enough numbers so aggression is spread out, it's been absolutely fine.

Thanks guys, been fascinated with them for quite some time now and have a reasonable size tank.

DB, seen yours and the tank there in, that tank looks Awsome! You having many Dorado's says they must be as fascinating to keep as they are to look at!?!!?

Used to be supreme favorite fish to keep simply cause of the activity level. I get bored easy and fall asleep if there's not something going on in my tanks. So for the simple fact they're non stop swimmers Tor/Masheer, Lince and Dorado have all been fish that sit at the top of the list of must haves...... The only thing that nudged the Dorado out of the top spot for me has been Tatf. To see a big one is breathtaking. BUT they aren't tough as Dorado, NOR do they understand the confinements of our glass boxes. They are MUCH better suited for aquarium life then ATF.

Wait till it's big enough to eat frogs..... Hell of a show!
