underwater obsession
Hi Just wondering if people can post some experience with dorados shoaling? Im planning on purchasing 5 of them. Im just nervous there going to turn on each other. I have a 225 gal tank for them. Or I can use my grow out tanks to divide them if necessary. Thanks in advance for any input from anybody.

i just got two in 3 weeks ago.i love them i had them in my 240 gallon but they were beating each other so i have moved hem both into a 1300 gallon 18' long tank.it seems if you keep just two in a smallertank all they do is chase each other. i would advise not keeping to many in a 225 for the same reason as i just experienced,now theirs alot of room for them to swim away.i 225 is not even close to being big enough to house dorados in these fish get 60lbs.

me and a buddie bought 10 each from jeff rapps about a year an a half ago and we both had differnt experience, out of all my ten, i have only one left, because one of them killed 5 an i had to sell the other 4 because he was trying to kill them, and the one i have left is very very aggresive an mean, but my buddie bought ten from the same batch an he still have all of his an he say they are doing good. so i guess its depending on the fish. oh and another thing we paid $35 for our 4"dorados from jeff rapps so i do'nt know why he is selling them same size ones for a $100 thats to high

Interesting comments. I read stories like these about these fish . It really gets me nervous. I do have a bigger tank also besides a 225gal. Thats just for now. It looks like I have 50/50 chance on these guys. Is there any vendor besides Jeff Rapps that sell dorados at this time? Shark Aquarium has them but there even more pricier.

The Dorado question comes around quite regularly (I asked for opinions not 3 months ago) so it might be worth some searching for more detail. jhowever, these are the headlines that I have gleened from the reading I have done;

Personally, I wouldn't keep one in anything less than a 450g. Considering the size (at least 24" within 2-3 years) and sheer tenacity, you'd be asking for serious trouble trying to keep multiple specimens in anything less than 900g. So many people have tried and watched everything fall to pieces, you'd be incredibly lucky to keep more than one in the same tank peacefully. Of course, there is the point that there is nothing like a Dorado for its energy, even under aquarium conditions. If you have the tank to do it, you're not going to be dissapointed with a Dorado but it is a comitment and you would probably have to stock the tank around the Dorado and be prepared for some losses.

This is a good question about the dorado's, never owned one but how are they with other tankmates like armatus, gatf, ray's, arrow etc's are they that mean??

How fast do dorado's grow compared to say armatus, arrow and dats?

Really, DAMN that's got to be the fastest growing fish in the world.
