It's been a while since I last sought advice here on my personal matters, but I thought I'd make good use of your opinion on this dilemma; which I must decide quickly.
I'm currently a college student, going to business school in Manhattan. I live in my own apartment with a roommate in Brooklyn. The lease is due to expire this summer, and I don't intend to extend it. My roommate is moving to Italy in a few weeks, and if I don't find another apartment for next year then I must dorm.
Dorm requests have to be submitted before my current semester ends, which is next week. If I don't request for a dorm ($6,600 per semester, which is roughly 4 months), then I will have no choice but to find a new apartment.
My current apartment is about $1500 per month including utility. There's no way I can find another apartment in or near Manhattan for any less than that and since I won't have a roommate next year; I will have to eat up all the costs myself. I did a quick search online for one bedroom apartments in Manhattan and it averages $1800 for the lower end.
By calculating the costs, it's obviously more sensible that I should dorm, but I'm also looking for a semi-permanent place of my own that I can settle through college and of course dorm, in that sense, would not be the most attractive offer to me.
If you were in my situation, what would you do?
